A collection of six fun and stylish hats, Liberation celebrates some very remarkable women with each hat. Each hat design is named after women who lived during the period of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. I wanted to honor their accomplishments and the roads that they have paved for me as an Asian-American woman from an immigrant family. Of course, I cannot design a collection of knitted hats without honoring two great women in the knitting world: Elizabeth Zimmermann and Barbara G. Walker. Thanks to nudging from friends, I approached Ms. Walker and Meg Swansen at Sock Summit 2009. Both were gracious as I ( with shaky hands and thumping heart) briefly explained my project. They seemed tickled by the idea and Ms. Walker chose a design for her namesake while Ms. Swansen chose a design for Elizabeth Zimmermann's, her mother's, namesake.
